Can security cameras work without electricity?
Gradually more people decide to install security cameras to protect their private properties. It’s also because security systems are chepaer than ever. One of major question that pops up when you decide to install a security camera, is that if it works when power is out. And getting a camera that does work even when there’s no electricity, is crucial to protecting your properties. The answer isn’t clear-cut, actually it depends on the type of security camera have you installed. And there are several types to choose from and they can be powered differently. Generally, the security cameras will stop working when the power is out. If you have backup power source- they will work either way.
Different types of power source for your security camera
However if you don’t a backup power source and wish your security cameras to work nevertheless, battery powered security camera is a choice for you. This type of camera runs on battery power and will continue to detect and record motion events, save the footages of burglars just as usual. So this is the first solution to this problem: battery powered cameras. Some of them even have solar panel to provide non-stop power. If you like to play MacGyver, you could do a DIY solar-powered security camera. There are plenty of tutorials around the internet, but it’s option only for patient and knowledgeable people!
Easier solution is to use UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). All you need to do is connect the devices to the UPS (which is pre-stored inside battery backup). If the power-cut is long, it’s better to have a backup power generator, which can supply energy longer than UPS. But the ideal solution is to get both UPS and power generator, as the latter needs some time to start working. So the general answer is – security cameras only work when there is electricity.
